Advancing Research in Child Well-Being

This article, featured in the Journal of Child & Adolescent Trauma, examines the peak team curriculum. The program creates positive childhood experiences and builds resilience in students exposed to toxic stress. Researchers surveyed predominantly Black students in grades 4-7 at a public charter school to assess their strengths, needs, and the program’s impact. Findings showed students had optimism, emotional awareness, and strong family support. However, they also faced challenges like neighborhood distrust, grief, and pandemic-related stress.

“Understanding and addressing toxic stress in childhood is essential to building resilient communities. Our research highlights the role of trauma-informed programs in helping students regulate emotions, strengthen relationships, and thrive academically,” said Melissa. “I am honored to contribute to this critical conversation and support innovative approaches to child well-being.”

Teachers and administrators observed improvements in student engagement, emotional regulation, and social interactions. They recommended expanding the program to promote emotional well-being and academic success.
