49 years of providing financial stability to families.
Child Support Awareness Month acknowledges and celebrates the vital role that child support programs play in strengthening family bonds and ensuring the well-being of children. This year marks the 49th anniversary of efforts by the Federal Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) and state child support agencies to transform the lives of millions of children by ensuring they receive the financial, emotional, and medical support they need from both parents.
Beyond Financial Aid
Child support is significantly more than financial assistance. It is the foundation for building resilient families. Providing for children is about more than covering their basic needs. It is about cultivating an environment where they can flourish. Child support obligations include helping with food, clothing, education, and healthcare costs.
In Fiscal Year 2023, the child support program collected $29.6 billion, impacting 12.7 million children nationwide. This places child support as a crucial program in combatting child poverty and promoting the welfare of children and families.
A Holistic Approach to Supporting Families
The child support program does more than facilitate the transfer of payments from one parent to another. It encompasses establishing parentage, modifying and enforcing child support and medical support orders, and collaborating with agencies to tackle interconnected issues like domestic violence and employment.
