CSF Awarded 5-Year Contract to Support Mississippi’s Department of Child Protective Services

SILVER SPRING, MD (November 29, 2017) – CSF is proud to be awarded a five-year contract to support the Mississippi Department of Child Protective Services (MDCPS) Leadership’s efforts to build a prevention-focused and trauma-informed child welfare system. Running from November 2017 through November 2022, this new contract allows CSF to continue its current work providing technical assistance in implementing the MDCPS child welfare practice model in light of the provisions of the Olivia Y 2nd Modified Mississippi Settlement Agreement and Reform Plan (2nd MSA). CSF will also continue working with MDCPS to implement the MDCPS Practice Model Learning Cycle, a development and learning model that includes preparation activities, virtual learning modules, and structured application sessions.

CSF coaches facilitate sessions with regional leadership teams to help prepare the regions for virtual learning modules and the structured practice application sessions. CSF coaches also facilitate structured practice application sessions with regional supervisors and workers to help them apply, practice, demonstrate and display the selected key behaviors/skills using fidelity measures.

As MDCPS reduces unnecessary out-of-home placements and safely reunifies children with their parents, the number of children in foster care will decrease and consequently the level of trauma, grief and loss will be reduced. Separating a child from his or her parents is a traumatic event to be avoided when possible. In a trauma-informed child welfare system, children and families are strengthened to better cope with their stressors as MDCPS acts with a sense of urgency, maintains parent-child relationships, and works with families to identify and help heal trauma. These improvements in family functioning will result in more stable living situations and, ultimately, families will experience improved child and family outcomes.

Will Hornsby, Vice President for CSF’s Child Welfare Practice, said, “CSF is honored to continue our work supporting MDCPS in their efforts to build a prevention-focused and trauma-informed child welfare system to help children and families in Mississippi more effectively achieve positive safety, permanency, and well-being outcomes.”
