Family is Best Interest: Restoring the Narrative for Family Unification

United States – December 15, 2022 – Public Knowledge® publishes the newest issue of its digital, peer-reviewed journal, the Family Integrity & Justice Quarterly. Entitled “Family Is Best Interest,” it is the fourth installment in the international consulting firm’s mission to elevate the voices of lived expertise in the child welfare system.

“We are honored to be able to share the stories of so many families impacted by harmful policy and legislation. We have to restore power to families and change the narrative of the child welfare system to prioritize family unification.”

Stacey Moss, President of Public Knowledge®

The term “best interest” is often used in child welfare to guide decisions on removing children from their families. The problem is the lack of federal definition and standardization of this phrase; it is highly subjective.

“My time as a family defense attorney has given me a front-row seat to the devastation and trauma that comes from removing a child from their home. The current system is engineered to separate families and not to unify and support families. This is not in a child’s best interest.’

Jey Rajaraman, Management Consultant for Family Integrity & Justice Works
